To answer your question, I'm not sure where you saw people write an "X" after their name. But it is not common in America.
In the past, people would write an "X" for their name if they were not able to write in Englis. It was an easy way for them to sign documents. They would simply write an "X" where they were supposed to sign.
The only other time that I know of when people write an "X" for their name is when they are a relative of someone with the same name. For example: if my name is Grant and I have a son and name him Grant, his name could be Grant II (two). If he has two sons and names them Grant, their names would be Grant III and Grant IV, and so on.
